| ![]() Part one is done. There are a lot of people who helped to make this project successful, but more than anybody, my little girlfriend Dominique Karwoski put hundreds of hours of her time into helping these installations shine. With very little material compensation. Along the road we met a lot of people, had a good time, made some money, lost some money, but we learned a lot from it, and I've already begun planning a mid-western tour. ONE: Across America is a traveling series of installations, each revolving around the central idea of the human identity and it's visual shape. The tour began in Harveyville, Kansas and will make its way west to the Pacific Ocean. During the first installation, which was up for a week in September of 2006, we photographed nearly 300 people standing in the center. This time we hope to shoot thousands. The installation is made up of several hundred steel conduit pipes hammered into the ground. By a feat of perspective the space flattens from the vantage point at the top of the ladder. From here the portraits are taken and are made available in the links below. We have the financial support of several small grants, including the Byron McKeown Special Sculpture Grant, which covers some of the initial costs of construction and materials. This project is also supported by Grant Pound at the Colorado Art Ranch, Carol Martin, chair of the Durango Arts Commission, Ed Dadey and Janet Williams at the Art Farm in Nebraska, By traveling across the nation, we are creating a collective portrait. Each location that we stop at we will photograph a couple hundred some odd portraits of individuals. Each group of photographs becomes its own identity with its own landscape, and I believe that slowly, we will amass a very large community composed of individual communities composed of individuals. And they will be One. ![]() | |
